Connecticut has a long history of gem production, and the many old mines and quarries which dot its landscape are a testament to that tradition. Connecticut is most well known for its garnets which are primarily sourced from the Triassic age schists exposed by the Connecticut River. While the overall variety of rocks, gems, and minerals is sub-par, the state does still offer quite a few great rockhounding locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The best places to rockhound in Connecticut are old mines and quarries, some of which can be hard to gain access to. Outcrops of schist and basalt in the Connecticut River Valley expose pegmatites, garnets, and other minerals. Check out the south and southwest side for your best chances.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/41%C2%B016'04.2%22N+72%C2%B034'11.8%22W\/@41.26784,-72.572129,801m\/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x89e628fab1ba7717:0xad8dd68e81d5b075!2sHammonasset+Beach!3b1!8m2!3d41.2602557!4d-72.5587472!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d41.2678402!4d-72.5699408\" target=\"_blank\">Hammonasset Beach, Madison<\/a><\/strong> &ndash; Small grains of garnet can be found in the sand, especially near Webster Point on the western end of the beach. They are so prevalent they give the sand a pinkish color.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/41%C2%B051'25.9%22N+73%C2%B006'37.4%22W\/@41.8572,-73.1125787,794m\/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x89e798599111dfb9:0xce41e7fca6b1611c!2sTorrington,+CT!3b1!8m2!3d41.8003049!4d-73.1211715!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d41.8572002!4d-73.1103897\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Torrington<\/strong><\/a> &ndash; The basalt sills exposed all around Torrington are known to contain agates and prehnite. Search at the base of these exposures for material that has recently weathered out.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/41%C2%B033'11.5%22N+72%C2%B026'54.3%22W\/@41.553186,-72.449391,356m\/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x89e6466d35558fdb:0xe319c61247dd0db1!2sEast+Hampton,+CT!3b1!8m2!3d41.5757748!4d-72.5026249!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d41.5531862!4d-72.4484152\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Salmon River State Forest, Colchester<\/strong><\/a> &ndash; The best place to find garnets is near the SE corner of the Comstock Covered Bridge. You can also check the gravels all along the banks of the Salmon River.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/41%C2%B042'52.7%22N+72%C2%B050'47.0%22W\/@41.714635,-72.8479312,564m\/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x89e7ae16abb5a00b:0xd18cd2b24e6ea2a7!2sFarmington,+CT!3b1!8m2!3d41.7360305!4d-72.795027!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d41.7146353!4d-72.8463804\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Farmington<\/strong><\/a> &ndash; You can try searching in almost any area surrounding Farmington for agates and prehnite. I would especially recommend searching in the gravels of stream beds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/41%C2%B051'37.6%22N+72%C2%B022'39.2%22W\/@41.86044,-72.3793754,665m\/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x89e6f35d88939d8d:0x3b59035b904c52f6!2sTolland,+CT+06084!3b1!8m2!3d41.8714865!4d-72.3686931!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d41.8604401!4d-72.3775417\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Tolland<\/strong><\/a>&ndash; Most of the road cuts and outcrops in this area expose garnet-bearing schists. Try looking in the talus and debris at their base for garnets, quartz crystals, and staurolites that have weathered out of the exposure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/42%C2%B001'27.9%22N+72%C2%B020'26.5%22W\/@42.024422,-72.3428907,792m\/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x89e69351a5f11653:0xc77c361e6a275efd!2sCrow+Hill+Brook!3b1!8m2!3d42.0256517!4d-72.3311129!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d42.0244222!4d-72.340702\" target=\"_blank\">Quartzite Hill, Stafford<\/a><\/strong> &ndash; This is a relatively unique area because the garnets found here are in a quartzite matrix as opposed to schist.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/41%C2%B015'53.2%22N+72%C2%B023'24.2%22W\/@41.264774,-72.3907131,245m\/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x89e623aa501d8beb:0x905dd523c8774a5f!2sOld+Saybrook,+CT!3b1!8m2!3d41.2960159!4d-72.3845301!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d41.2647745!4d-72.3900434\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Plum Bank Beach, in gravels<\/strong><\/a> &ndash; The gravels along Plum Bank Beach will usually turn up some agates and moonstone. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/41%C2%B017'19.9%22N+73%C2%B013'35.1%22W\/@41.288856,-73.2285429,777m\/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x89e809037747ef31:0x3dab7cdb718892fd!2sLong+Hill,+Trumbull,+CT+06611!3b1!8m2!3d41.2656518!4d-73.224281!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d41.2888557!4d-73.2264219\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Long Hill Mine in Old Mine Park<\/strong><\/a> &ndash; This old mine is a well-known historical collecting site that has produced specimens of calcite, fluorite, pyrite, scheelite, and blue topaz.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Connecticut doesn&rsquo;t have the largest array of rocks and minerals, but there are still quite a few worthwhile varieties that can be found across the state. The most notable mineral collected in Connecticut is probably almandine (an attractive species of garnet) which can be found in schists and gravels across a large area. These are mostly comprised of beaches, old mining prospects, washes, streams, and historically known rock and mineral collecting sites. Specimens may become depleted from other collectors, the location may have been built on or altered, locality information in literature may be inaccurate, and property ownership may have changed hands. Joining up with a local rockhounding club for a group trip can often get you access to otherwise off-limits locations like privately owned mines and quarries. There are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rockhounds.com\/rockshop\/clubs\/connecticut.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">many rockhounding clubs in Connecticut<\/a> but I&rsquo;d specifically recommend the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lmscc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Meriden Mineral Club<\/a>. Though there are many locations listed here, this list is far from exhaustive. Several varieties of garnet can be found in localities all across the state and any collector in the area will want to be sure to snag some for themselves. As relatively common as it is, you still need to know where to look in order to increase your chances of finding a quality specimen. This list is far from exhaustive (there are countless mines and quarries in Connecticut where garnet and other minerals can be found) but it should give you a good starting point if you want to go look for garnet. Unfortunately for rockhounds, the law in most states prohibits them from publishing their names or contact information online. You can usually get the landowner&rsquo;s name and address by visiting the county records office.
