Dozens of rare minerals were first identified in New Jersey and, to this day, some of them can only be found here. The superior quality of specimens is nearly matched by the sheer number of viable rockhounding sites. Particularly in the northern and central part of the state, almost any rocky outcrop, exposure, or gravel pit has the potential to produce interesting rocks, minerals, or gemstones. Southern New Jersey is particularly notable for its amber and &lsquo;Cape May Diamonds&rsquo; which are actually weathered quartz crystals that wash up on ocean beaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The best places to rockhound in New Jersey are ocean beaches, old quarries, the dumps of historical mines, gravels of streams and rivers, and the debris at the base of rocky exposures and outcrops. These are actually quartz crystals that have weathered out of the mountains and made their way to the ocean via the Delaware River. You can also find various colors of chalcedony at Higbee Beach.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/40%C2%B021'41.9%22N+74%C2%B048'22.7%22W\/@40.3616491,-74.808509,815m\/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x89c3fb60ce43e853:0xbd3631b7f260a24!2sPennington+Mountain!3b1!8m2!3d40.3570508!4d-74.8059964!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d40.3616454!4d-74.8063151\" target=\"_blank\">Pennington Mountain<\/a><\/strong> &ndash; This area is well known for producing a wide variety of gem-quality minerals. This region is famous for fine gem-quality amber specimens but you can also hope to find jasper and banded agates.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/40%C2%B006'45.8%22N+74%C2%B001'54.5%22W\/@40.1127281,-74.033988,818m\/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x89c22b767148f615:0x817541b9470d0119!2sManasquan,+NJ!3b1!8m2!3d40.1136928!4d-74.0376355!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d40.1127242!4d-74.0317938\" target=\"_blank\">Manasquan Beach<\/a><\/strong> &ndash; The ocean beaches near Manasquan and extending south along the coast are a great place to rockhound. You can often find &lsquo;Cape May Diamonds&rsquo;, fossils, and even petrified wood in the beach gravels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Franklin+Furnace\/@41.1162544,-74.5886478,479m\/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x89c314a9f5de00b1:0x587db5dcc13126e7!8m2!3d41.1162265!4d-74.587242\" target=\"_blank\">Franklin Furnace<\/a><\/strong> &ndash; This old mine (and the entire surrounding mining district) is one of the most significant and famous gemstone producers in the United States. Hundreds of mineral varieties are present in the area and include fluorite, franklinite, ad magnetite. Check out the nearby mining museum while you&rsquo;re there for a world-class display of fluorescent minerals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/40%C2%B055'27.2%22N+74%C2%B017'11.5%22W\/@40.9242247,-74.2874629,341m\/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x89c30260113c84d3:0xe654539a1cb20344!2sWayne,+NJ+07470!3b1!8m2!3d40.9253725!4d-74.2765441!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d40.924223!4d-74.2865367\" target=\"_blank\">Pompton River<\/a><\/strong> &ndash; Check out the gravels and sands of the Pompton River to find gemstone quality specimens of a wide variety of minerals. Hundreds of mineral varieties have been found in New Jersey, many of which were first identified there. The unique geology of the northern part of the state has created a breeding ground for high-quality gemstones and minerals that are sought by rock and mineral collectors all over the world. Unfortunately for rockhounds, the law in most states prohibits them from publishing their names or contact information online. You can usually get the landowner&rsquo;s name and address by visiting the county records office.
